Allow Apps to Request to Track Greyed Out? What to Check

Check Apple's four reasons for a greyed-out iPhone tracking switch, find the setting, and understand what changing it means for an existing game offer.

If Allow Apps to Request to Track is greyed out on your iPhone, first check your Apple Account and device status. Apple lists four situations that can prevent the switch from being enabled: age or child-account restrictions, an institution-managed account, a device profile that limits tracking, and an account created in the last three days.

For a game offer, there are two separate questions: can this iPhone show the tracking request, and does the reward provider accept this particular offer attempt? Fixing the first does not answer the second. This walkthrough uses Apple's tracking documentation and a public Tapjoy support example. We checked the help pages; we have not tested an account restriction or completed a reward offer on your behalf.

First distinguish an off switch from an unavailable switch

Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. Apple documents this location for iPhone and iPad. Look at the main switch and the individual apps beneath it.

An available switch set to off is a privacy choice. A switch you cannot enable needs a different check: whether the account or device falls into one of Apple's restricted situations. Take note of what the screen actually says before trying a fix.

When the main switch is off, apps requesting tracking permission are treated as if you declined. Apple also explains that the apps cannot access the advertising identifier, or IDFA. That explains the setting's purpose; it does not diagnose every missing reward.

Match your situation to Apple's documented reasons

What to checkWhat Apple documentsPractical next step
Age and child-account statusChild accounts and users under 18 by birth year can be restricted; child-account ages vary by region.Check the accurate account details. Do not change age information to qualify for an offer.
School or business Apple AccountInstitution-managed accounts can be restricted.Ask the account administrator about the policy before planning an offer around this device.
Managed deviceA configuration profile can limit tracking.Ask the device owner or administrator to explain the restriction.
Recently created Apple AccountAccounts created in the last three days can be restricted.Recheck after that period; if the switch stays unavailable, investigate the other documented reasons or contact Apple.

Apple Support lists four reasons the tracking permission switch cannot be enabled

Use this table to decide whom to contact and whether to postpone starting. It is an editorial decision aid based on Apple's list, rather than a guarantee that a particular account will be unlocked.

For example, a recently created account gives you a reason to wait and check again. A school-managed account gives you a reason to ask the administrator. Those are different situations, so a single “reset everything” instruction would miss the distinction.

Before installing a reward game

Read the offer's own iPhone eligibility and tracking instructions before following its installation link. If the offer explicitly requires a permission your device cannot provide, pause before installation and ask the provider whether you can participate on that device.

Our recommended question is specific: “This iPhone cannot enable the tracking request because of this documented account or device restriction. Does this exact offer accept that situation?” Include the offer name and provider. Do not send your Apple password or a complete account-settings screenshot.

Keep the offer's entry conditions and answer together. A general troubleshooting article cannot grant an exception to a provider's rules. If you decide to compare alternatives, use the offer catalogue to inspect device requirements, rather than assuming that a matching game title has matching terms.

If you already installed or started the offer

Record the offer name, provider, installation date, device and the visible tracking status. Keep genuine screenshots of the task list and completed milestone. This gives support a clear sequence without claiming to prove the advertiser recorded the event.

Avoid treating reinstallation, changing accounts or moving progress as a way to restart eligibility. Tapjoy's missing-reward guidance says that changing the advertising identifier during an offer can interfere with credit and that most app publishers do not allow offer progress to move to a new device. That is a Tapjoy example, not a universal rule for every wall.

If account or device status later changes, Apple says the next tracking request can display after you choose to enable requests. Apple does not promise that this reconstructs earlier advertising attribution or credits an earlier offer. Ask the provider about the existing attempt before spending more time or money.

Use our support-ticket template to organize that request. Describe what happened instead of reporting “tracking fixed” merely because a switch changed.

FAQ

Does a greyed-out switch mean my iPhone is broken?

No. Apple documents account and device restrictions that can prevent the switch from being enabled. Check those reasons first; if they do not explain your situation, contact Apple Support.

Will waiting three days always fix it?

No. A recently created Apple Account is only one documented reason. Age restrictions, institution-managed accounts and device profiles can also prevent the setting from being enabled.

Can I still use the app if I decline tracking?

Apple says an app's full capabilities remain available when tracking is declined. Reward eligibility is a separate question governed by the particular offer's requirements.

Will enabling tracking later recover my game reward?

Apple's documentation describes future permission requests, not recovery of past offer credit. Ask the reward provider about the existing attempt; no recovery outcome is established by changing this switch.
